Winners Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Tina Maze of Slovenia celebrate after the women's alpine skiing downhill event during a flower ceremony at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics at the Rosa Khutor Alpine CenterOlympic history has been made in Sochi!  For the first time, two women will take home the gold in the alpine skiing event.  Slovenia’s Tina Maze and Switzerland’s Dominique Gisin had the exact same time, one minute and 41.57 seconds, on the downhill event.  This is the eighth time two competitors will take home the gold for the same event, so how do the winners feel about sharing the podium?

They could not be happier for one another! “I’m sure glad I’m going to share this gold with Tina,” said Gisin. “She’s such a great woman and one of the greatest athletes of our sport.”  Maze continued, “It’s even more interesting because it’s not a usual thing. It’s something special.”

This is Gisin’s first major medal in the Olympics. She competed four years ago, but crashed during her run and sustained a concussion.  For Maze, this is her first gold medal.  She won two silver medals four years ago in Vancouver.  Congratulations to both ladies!
