Many never thought they would see the day an openly gay athlete was taken in the NFL draft, but it happened in 2014.  Michael Sam, the SEC co-defensive player of the year, announced to the world that he was in a relationship with another man and was planning on entering the draft.  The announcement was broadcasted on every major news outlet with everyone and anyone weighing in on Sam’s decision to come out to the world.

His new found fame clearly affected Sam on the field as he failed to impress at the Combine. Originally projected to be drafted in third or fourth round, Sam fell all the way to the seventh and final round of the draft.  The St. Louis Rams decided to make history and draft Sam with only  few picks left in the entire draft.  A reality show was allegedly in the works for Sam, but that deal fell through when the rumors hit the internet and the show idea was immediately with backlash.

Sam had some bright spots during the preseason and many thought he might have a chance at making the final 53 man roster in St. Louis.  The Rams are loaded at the defensive end position and chose a more versatile player over Sam.  His Rams jersey became the second highest selling rookie jersey.  The Dallas Cowboys added Sam to their practice squad, but he was released shortly after.  He remains a free agent and is still hopeful and making his debut in a regular season game.
