Washington Redskins owner Daniel Synder has stood firm that he will not be changing the team’s name as long as he is the owner.  Despite the word being considered a racial slur, Snyder refuses to change the name of his brand.  Fifty United States senators have decided to take matters into their own hands.

The senators wrote a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell urging him to force a name change, especially after the racist comments made by Clippers owner Donald Sterling. In the letter, they reference the swift actions taken by NBA Adam Silver against Sterling and say it is now time for the NFL to take action against bigotry.  Two senators from Virginia were noticeably absent on the list of signatures.

Here is the letter, including all of the signatures:

  1. I totally understand the concern and actions being taken, but why is the Senate only focusing on the Redskins of the NFL? As a Cleveland Indians, I would rather not see Chief Wahoo go anywhere, but why isn’t the same concern being expressed for Major League Baseball? I know that the NFL will always reign supreme in this country, but if you want to make a statement, why not include America’s Pastime? Personally, I think the Indians and Redskins need to change their names and their brands so they can save face in the sensitive society we live in today. Regardless, great piece as always Ashleigh!

    1. Completely agree with you! I don’t know how you can ask for one to be changed and not the other. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
