Happy new NFL season! Last night kicked off a fresh start for all thirty-two teams in the National Football League.

And with the first pick, the Carolina Panthers selected Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. Not much of a surprise there as the Panthers desperately needed a quarterback and Young was the top rated in the draft class. The Panthers acquired the number pick via a trade with the Chicago Bears for Carolina’s top picks in this year and next year’s draft and DJ Moore.

After Young came off the board, the Houston Texans selected their next franchise quarterback, CJ Stroud.  Stroud easily could have gone number one after a great season at Ohio State. For a team that desperately needs a new image Stroud is a perfect choice.

After that we had our first sign of excitement when Arizona announced they traded their pick to the Texans grabbing Will Anderson Jr. who will learn so much under new head and former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans. Anderson Jr. is a two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Clearly Houston is putting the AFC South on notice that they are ready to compete this season. They gave up a lot for the third pick, but they picked up two potential franchise-changing players on day one of the draft.

Within the first five picks we saw three quarterbacks come off the board after Indianapolis selected Florida QB Anthony Richardson. The picks made history. It was the first time that three Black quarterbacks were selected in the top five ever.

After finally doing right by their franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens picked up a great weapon for the team’s offense in Zay Flowers. Earlier today the Ravens gave Jackson a five-year deal worth $260 million making him the highest paid player in the league. The Ravens also signed Odell Beckham Jr. who missed all of last season after tearing his ACL during Super Bowl LVI.

The rich definitely got richer in Philadelphia with the Eagles selecting two defensive studs from Georgia. The number two ranked defense added DT Jalen Carter and DE Nolan Smith. For a team that had seventy sacks last season this just puts them even further above every other team.

Many would consider the biggest surprise of the night Kentucky QB Will Levis not getting selected in the first round especially with so many teams in need of a quarterback.
