For many athletes playing in the WNBA, their salaries are just not enough to cover their living expenses. Many choose to play overseas where they are paid much better than in the United States. That’s a lot of strain on their bodies with many athletes playing basketball all year long. For many, the toll can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. Players are hoping to change with the new player-driven Athletes Unlimited league.
Athletes Unlimited puts the power back in the athletes’ hands. With women’s volleyball, lacrosse, and softball leagues already established, basketball was the natural next step. The league already has support from current WNBA players including Natasha Cloud, Lexie Brown, Tianna Hawkins, and many others. Athletes are from various playing levels from WNBA champions to college and overseas players.
Not having owners and general managers the business and politics are removed from the league. It is composed of four teams of eleven players with no traditional coaches and rosters shifting each week. Individual performance is rewarded instead of overall team performance. Tianna Hawkins was crowned the inaugural champion leading the league in rebounds and double-doubles and second in points scored. Lexie Brown thinks the league can make a real impact on womens sports,
“I think it can change the landscape of women’s basketball in the States.”
Many of the struggles WNBA athletes run into are addressed in the AU league. One of the most important being child care options, something players in the WNBA struggle with and fought for their in their new agreement. Atlanta Dream guard Odysey Sims told Andscape, “The little things like that makes us moms feel more comfortable, because it’s not easy to be a full-time athlete and a full-time mom”. The league encouraged players to bring their children even having a designated playroom.
The athletes are already building a fan base especially with the next generation of hoop fans.
The league already announced that it will return next season with more WNBA players interested. Four of the athletes who joined the league have already gotten training camp invite with various WNBA teams. The league has real potential for exponential growth. In it’s inaugural season it already boasts sponsors like Nike, Gatorade, and Geico. In the new collective bargaining agreement, however, the WNBA forces players to prioritize the league above their other playing commitments.
