No longer overshadowed by the boys, it is the girls bringing home the gold to the US! Despite the women’s sports pay gap, the USWNT played like absolute rockstars with one of the most talented rosters of all time. The US Women’s National Team dominated Japan in the FIFA World Cup final match.  The team, which includes legends Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone as well as superstars Hope Solo and Alex Morgan.

The US team won 5-2 with Carli Lloyd scoring three of those goals; the second player ever to have a hat trick in the World Cup final match.  Lloyd’s biggest moment, however, came at the end of the game when she passed off the captain band to Wambach who announced that this would be her final World Cup appearance.

As if that was not enough girl power, Wimbeldon round of 16 featured a fierce face-off between sisters Venus and Serena Williams.  The sisters have faced off numerous times in their careers, always proving to be the toughest competitor for one another. Despite being two years younger, Serena has gotten the better of the matchup, winning 15 of their 26 meetings.

Serena is currently trying to complete the calendar Grand Slam, having won the US, French, and British Open this year.  Serena has not lost a match in 12 months.  Venus has been hampered by injuries in recent years and has not won it all at Wimbeldon in seven years. The two know that they might not have many more meetings like this one in the future and are looking to enjoy the opportunities that they do get to face off.
