2009-nfl-christmas-day-game-1It is crazy to think that there is only one week left in the NFL, but it is true!  While there is only one week left, there are still plenty of question marks in the playoff picture.  We also got to see the impossible happen, the Seattle Seahawks finally suffered a home loss in Russell Wilson’s career.

  • The Arizona Cardinals may be the best team to not make the playoffs this season.  Everyone knows about how good receiver Larry Fitzgerald is, but it is their defense that has impressed.  It was not as though the Seahawks did not play well.  In fact, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer threw four interceptions, but was able to make one big throw to Michael Floyd to win the game. While it is only one loss, it could have big implications.  The 49ers can still mathematically knock the Seahawks out of the first seed and gain home field advantage, something very important to Seattle.  Next week will be huge for the NFC West and the fate of these three teams.
  • One player who had an outstanding day was Peyton Manning.  He took the record for touchdown passes in a single season when threw his 51st of the season, previously held by New England quarterback Tom Brady.  Next week, he will attempt to break Drew Brees’ single season passing record.  While, all these records look good, it is a Super Bowl title that he is focused on.  The Broncos hold the number one seed in the AFC and home field advantage.  With the Patriots losing more players every week, the Broncos control whether they win or lose the AFC Championship.
  • The NFC North is still up for grabs.  The Detroit Lions have eliminated themselves from the playoffs after a terrible performance against a hobbled New York Giants team.  The Bears had the opportunity to win the division title, but were blown out by Philadelphia.  Green Bay is still without Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn could not finish a game-winning drive against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  With the win, the Steelers are still alive in the playoff race as well.
