Just when it looked like the United States had done the impossible, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal broke millions of hearts across America. The US had taken a 2-1 lead by the end of regulation time, but could not hold onto it in the extra few minutes granted. The US was seconds away from punching their ticket to the round of sixteen, but an assist from Ronaldo on a goal by Silvestre Varela halted those dreams.
That goal and an early goal by Nani were the US had a breakdown on defense allowed Portugal survive instead of heading back home. The US has a tough task ahead of them having to either tie or win against Germany on Thursday.
