Just when it looked like the United States had done the impossible, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal broke millions of hearts across America. Â The US had taken a 2-1 lead by the end of regulation time, but could not hold onto it in the extra few minutes granted. Â The US was seconds away from punching their ticket to the round of sixteen, but an assist from Ronaldo on a goal by Silvestre Varela halted those dreams.
That goal and an early goal by Nani were the US had a breakdown on defense allowed Portugal survive instead of heading back home. Â The US has a tough task ahead of them having to either tie or win against Germany on Thursday.
