The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced defenseman Kris Letang suffered a stroke last week. Â He is said to be doing well, but will need at least six weeks of recovery time. Â After that time period he will be reevaluated by doctors.
General manager Ray Shero revealed that Letang was experiencing dizziness when he went to the doctor for a battery of tests. Â Tests revealed that he had a small hole in the wall of his heart and now doctors are wondering if that is what caused the stroke. Â The condition is said to be treatable and will likely not end his career.
Letang commented on his health condition saying, I hope that by making my condition public at this time, I can help other people by encouraging them to seek medical help if they experience some of the symptoms associated with a stroke — regardless of their age or general health.  It obviously was a shock to get the news, but I’m optimistic that I can overcome this and get back on the ice.”
It is great to hear that he is doing well, but it is still a very scary situation. Currently, players not in the Olympics are resting and at this time Letang announced he will spending his time off with family. Â We are all hoping to see him back on the ice as soon as possible!
