Last night in overtime during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference playoff series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin’s dreams for winning the Stanley Cup were dashed yet again. The Caps have not been able to make it past the Conference Semifinals, and this postseason was no different.

The Penguins came out ready to oust their opponents and proceed to the next round of the playoffs. Pens forward Phil Kessel delivered his team’s first goal, and the only goal of the first period, about five minutes into the game. Kessel scored again in the second period on a power play assisted by Kris Letang. Speedy forward Carl Hagelin also cashed in on a power play goal less than a minute after his teammate’s. However, Pittsburgh was not alone in scoring with a man up. The Caps finally got on the board on a TJ Oshie power play goal shortly after the halfway point in the second period. The third period was all about Washington. The Caps were able to tie up their opponents with a Justin Williams goal and a John Carlson power play goal before regulation time was up.

Tied up by the end of the third period, the game was forced into overtime. Pittsburgh lead the series 3-2 but the Caps knew that if they got just one goal they could stay alive in the postseason. Unfortunately for them, the Penguins got that goal. Nick Bonino, assisted by the other Pens goal scorers Kessel and Hagelin, took the Penguins to the next step of winning the Stanley Cup.

Pittsburgh will play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals. Just four more wins away from playing in the Stanley Cup Finals for the most coveted trophy in hockey.
