sWhat a devastating blow for a team who was looking forward to a bright future.  Pitcher Matt Harvey looked like the second coming of Doc Gooden. He could throw on average 97-98 MPH, get out of jams, and most importantly make some of the biggest stars look silly swinging and missing at the plate.  Every game that he pitched, fans expected to see a no-hitter and it was mostly because Harvey had the talent to deliver one on any given start.

However, after the All-Star Game, Harvey clearly looked a little off.  He did not pitch badly, but he was as electrifying as he was at the beginning of the season. We now know that Harvey was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his pitching elbow.  Most of the time when the ligament is torn, Tommy John surgery is required.  While surgery is still uncertain, the Mets will put their ace on the disabled list for the rest of the year.

Harvey had risen to fame this year after he took over the ace role when Johan Santana required surgery at the beginning of the season.  He became a fan favorite with his tenacity and veteran-like attitude.  It was an incredible moment for the 24-year-old when he got to start the All-Star Game in his own ballpark, Citifield.   Harvey even struck out Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera, the most feared hitter in baseball.  It seemed like the world was Harvey’s to take.  He is young, good looking, and extremely talented.  He was taking over the media with his charisma and ability to poke fun at himself.

Hearing the news that Harvey is injured is the worst news any Mets fan could imagine.  David Wright is their All-Star infielder and Harvey was their power pitcher; the Mets were actually starting to build towards a playoff team.  Both are now on the disabled list and the Mets just look like a very dismal team with no future.  Harvey is the one guy the Mets could not afford to lose.  However, if there is one guy who has the will to come back stronger, it it Matt Harvey.  That might not be what Mets fans want to hear, but it is the most positive outlook on such awful news.
