When you think of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, one of the first things that come to mind are his statements to the press. Even though Lynch has since cooperated with the media, his statements have not seemed to get old and everyone still quotes them now.  Lynch has decided to cash in on the popularity of one of his particular statements, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined”, and has it trademarked via the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Along with “I’m just here so I won’t get fined”, Lynch has three other trademarks. Lynch has a trademark for his nickname, “Beastmode”, a trademark for “About that action, boss” and a trademark to use “Beastmode” on clothing that he sells on his website.  Lynch will let people use the “Beastmode” trademark if he is able to get a share of the profits. He must also be able to have approval on what the product looks like and according to ESPN, Lynch “rejects about five proposals a month” which isn’t too bad considering how popular it is.

Lynch isn’t the only one looking to cash in on what his signature phrases. After Kirk Cousins exclaimed “You like that?” at a group of reporters after a game, he was granted a trademark for it and sold t-shirts for charity. Even college athletes are getting in on it. Johnny Manziel trademarked the nickname, “Johnny Football”  along with Jameis Winston who trademarked “Famous Jameis” even after it was already being cashed in.

All of the excitement about Lynch off the field has not been translated to on the field, though. Lynch has been confirmed as “out” against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and has only appeared in seven games this season.  Lynch could still make a comeback for the playoffs, though!
