Pitch” is a new television series for the fall based around the idea of the first woman to play in Major League Baseball. The series is unlike most baseball-related projects because the production is heavily tied to an actual baseball team.

The San Diego Padres are the lucky team that lead character Ginny Baker will be playing for as a starting pitcher. The main character will be played by Kylie Bunbury, famously known for her role on the ABC Family show, “Twisted”.  Announcements for casting has been pretty quiet for now, but Dan Lauria and Mark-Paul Gosselaar have been announced along with Bunbury.  The drama will not only feature a female athlete but a female athlete of color, drawing inspiration from a real life female athlete.

Dan Fogelman will be writing and producing the show. Fogelman cited Mo’Ne Davis’ story as the basis for some of the series, “Mo’Ne Davis has been such a striking figure for us because it’s just so current” which should make for an intriguing concept. Another reason why Fogelman is so attached to this project is due to his love for the game. He is a die-hard New York Mets fan and cites that for his involvement.

Fogelman will hopefully be able to bring the idea to life in a realistic and non-stereotypical way. I don’t know if it’s too early to say this, but I have high expectations for the show and hope that it can take on the task without making a mockery of it. If it does, then it will be another failure at trying to have men and women on the same playing field. Will you be watching?  Here’s a look at the trailer for Pitch!
