During the Steelers vs Chargers game on Monday, DeAngelo Williams brought up a very interesting point, all the pink in the month of October. During October, teams are wearing pink to bring awareness to breast cancer, but Williams feels very differently. He believes that he should be able to wear pink all year round to honor his mother who tragically passed away from the disease.

Williams questioned the NFL on if he could wear pink all year round and the NFL gave him a big fat no which motivated Williams to put pink in his dreads to bring awareness all year. Along with the streaks, Williams has decided to pay for 53 mammograms for women in both the Pittsburgh and Charlotte area since he played for the Panthers before playing for the Steelers.

Williams has not been shy in hiding his feelings on the decision but has overall been respectful towards the league over their decision. When asked about the topic by ESPN reporter, Lisa Salters, Williams brought up a point that no one seems to think about, “It’s not just about October for me; it’s not just a month, it’s a lifestyle. It’s about getting women to recognize to get tested” which is what the NFL wants, right? If the NFL really cared so much about women, they would allow Williams to wear pink all year round and bring awareness to the disease that has taken so much from so many people.

As someone who has dedicated a majority of his life to the league, it would only be fair for the league to allow him to wear pink. If the league cared so much about women, then why is Greg Hardy allowed to play? Even though the case was eventually dropped, the NFL had to have found enough evidence to suspend Hardy. As one of the most popular  and powerful organizations in the world, it would only make sense for them to allow such a simple request be granted for a man who has lost his mother and four aunts to the horrible disease. However, the video on Williams’ twitter really tells everyone what they need to know.
