Some have criticized Colin Kaepernick for his on the field protest and lack of action. However, he’s silencing all of those critics, as seen by his work during the team’s bye week. In addition to prepping for next week’s game, Kap is working in the community to see his mission come to fruition and hopefully start to silence some of his critics. Entitled the “Know Your Rights Camp”, Kaepernick was joined by 100 kids, his girlfriend Nessa and some of his friends including WR Torrey Smith.

The camp was not only a way for Kaepernick to give back to the community but as he put it,

We’re here today to fight back and give you all lessons to combat the oppressive issues that our people face on a daily basis. We’re here to give you tools to help you succeed…We’re going to give you knowledge on policing history, what the systems of policing in America were based on, and we’re also going to teach you skills to make sure you always make it home safely.

What’s important is Kaepernick is actually holding himself accountable and going into the community and trying to make and promote change.

Kaepernick kept the details pretty hush hush, because he didn’t want it to be a media circus. He did, however, allow activist Shaun King and his son to attend the workshop. Kaepernick’s idea was for the kids to feel like it was just them instead of having the media cover the event and make it into a spectacle.

From what has been released about the event, Kaepernick gave out T-shirts reading “Know Your Rights” with ten rights illustrated on the back and backpacks with supplies for the kids. The 10 rights were based on the Black Panther Party’s 10-Point Program. Members of the Twitter community have been supportive of Kaepernick as pictures of Kaepernick and the shirts have found their way to social media.

He said he was going to make a change in the community and that’s what he’s doing. Even if you don’t agree with what Kaepernick’s doing, you have to applaud him for making a change. Keep doing you, Colin Kaepernick!
