It is the biggest honor any athlete can receive, the Most Valuable Player award. Â The MVP of the league is the one player that without him, the team would suffer tremendously. This year, it was obvious who exemplified that definition; Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen.
Pittsburgh Pirates Center Fielder Andrew McCutchen
He has brought excitement back to the Steel City. Â For an organization that has waited 21 years to get into the postseason, and McCutchen finally made fans dreams come true. Â Drafted in 2005 by the Pirates, McCutchen declined University of Florida’s scholarship offer. Â He made his debut in 2009 and scored three runs in the game against the New York Mets. Â It was clear he was a base stealing threat as well as a guy who could hit the ball out of the park. Over his career, he has gotten countless awards including Silver Slugger awards as well as a Gold Glove award. In 2013, McCutchen led the Pirates to their first winning season and playoff berth in over 20 years. Â He finished the season batting .317 and hitting 21 home runs. Â He is the true definition of a well rounded player.
Detroit Tigers Third Baseman Miguel Cabrera
There is not enough good things one can say about Miguel Cabrera. Â Last year’s triple crown winner, the power hitter put up better numbers this year than last year. Â While some power hitters are not known for their fielding, Cabrera is the exception. He finished this season hitting .348 with 44 home runs. Â This is Cabrera’s second straight MVP award. Â Cabrera is one of the best hitters in all of baseball’s history. Â This year really showed his toughness as he played through multiple injuries, and still played at an elite level.
