WNBA star Brittney Griner and wife Glory Johnson have had a rocky relationship the last couple of months.  The couple were both arrested after an argument turned violent in the Arizona home they bought together just two days before.  This was just a week after the couple announced on Instagram that they were engaged.  After the arrest, Griner pled guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and ordered to attend a domestic violence diversion program.  Johnson claims she was a victim during the argument, which seemed to be confirmed by a medical evaluation conducted after the arrest that showed significant head trauma.

Despite the arrest, the couple married the following month looking happy and in love. They even appeared on an episode “Say Yes to the Dress”. The bliss ended quickly when both were suspended by WNBA for their role in the argument.  Claiming they were both equally at fault, they were suspended seven games without pay each.  Johnson spoke with SI.com about the WNBA’s decision, “[The WNBA] definitely knew about it. And that’s another reason it surprised me that they came up with the same conclusion. I’m not going to throw Brittney under the bus … and she’s not going to throw me under the bus … [but] what the [WNBA] did not say in the statements they released was that I pled not guilty … So for them to release a statement saying that we were both guilty in the situation, it’s not right. It’s not correct … Brittney pled guilty … Brittney understands why I pled not guilty, and I understand why she pled guilty … she was even willing to speak to whoever she needed to, to get the point across.”

The couple stayed together despite a very difficult time and seemed to be happier than ever.  Just two days ago, a less than a month after the wedding, Johnson announced that she was carrying the couple’s first child.  The Tulsa Shock organization announced she would miss the entire season.

A lot can change in 24 hours.  Griner filed to annul the marriage, claiming she was “threatened” by Johnson to go through with it despite trying to reschedule it multiple times before the ceremony.  Griner continues by saying she has “no biological connection” to the child Johnson is currently carrying.  Johnson’s agent spoke out about Griner’s filing, saying Johnson is “shocked” and “loves Brittney”.

With a baby now on the way, this story is far from over.  Hopefully these two can work it out and make everyone happy, but that rarely happens.  The WNBA season opened last night with neither playing.
