The San Francisco 49ers have made the tough, but correct decision releasing linebacker Aldon Smith this afternoon.  Smith was arrested yesterday night for allegedly being involved in a hit and run, driving under the influence, and vandalism. He was booked at a Santa Clara jail and held on $26,000 bail. Since entering the league in 2011, this is his third arrest related to driving under the influence.

Smith was arrested in January 2012 for suspicion of driving under the influence which was reduced to reckless driving.  Later that same year, he was at a house party where he was allegedly stabbed and was arrest on three weapons charges, which were later reduced.  More than a year later, he was arrested for driving under the influence after getting into a car accident on his way to practice.  Shortly after he voluntary sought help and checked himself into rehab.

In the past, Smith’s talent had allowed the team to give him second chances, but the team had to finally put their foot down.  He has missed a total of thirteen games the past two season stemming from his time in rehab and league suspensions.  He is no longer helping his team by constantly getting suspended.  He has a problem with alcohol and now that he has hit rock bottom, it is time he gets as much help as he needs.  49ers GM Trent Baalke said on Tuesday the team was interested in re-signing the linebacker and that he is “maturing” like any other young player.  Without getting help and still facing suspension this season, it would be surprising to see a lot of teams try and sign the linebacker despite his talent level.
