The 2017 World Baseball Classic is fully underway, but the Netherlands national team will be without one of their key players. Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius will be off the field for a few weeks after an MRI done on Monday revealed a hematoma in the 27-year-old’s shoulder.

Following Saturday’s exhibition game at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks, Gregorius was experiencing some stiffness and precautionary testing was done. He then flew to see the Yankees’ team doctors in Tampa where the next MRI was done, confirming the hematoma of the subscapularis muscle in the right shoulder.

Didi’s manager, Joe Girardi, told reporters that it is something you don’t want to hear, but the doctors were encouraged by Didi’s strength and felt good. Gregorius had been playing extremely well for the Netherlands, batting an impressive .348 with one home run and eight RBIs.

The Yankees were hopeful that Gregorius will be ready for Opening Day on April 2nd, but they found out that he will not be ready for the first couple of weeks of the season.  Yankees general manager Brian Cashman as well as Girardi, both say that his replacement will likely be either young stud Tyler Wade or Gleyber Torres.  Cashman said it is unlikely Gregorius will be ready before May.

Wishing Didi Gregorius a speedy recovery from his injury!
