Yesterday the initial verdict of not guilty of premeditated murder was handed down.  Today, we have learned Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide.  Culpable homicide is the equivalent of manslaughter in America.  Judge Thokozile Matilda Masip announced the verdict, but allowed Pistorius to remain out on bail until his sentencing, scheduled for October 13th.

Pistorius never denied shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, however, he maintained that he thought she was an intruder.  Pistorius shot four times into the couple’s bathroom not realizing it was his girlfriend.  Witnesses claim they heard a male and female voice arguing that night, however, Pistorius claimed he loved his girlfriend and would never intentionally harm her.

Judge Masip said Pistorius’ account of the events seemed plausible, but still said he acted negligible in shooting a weapon.  He was also acquitted of two firearm charges, but he was found guilty of firing a shot in a restaurant.  The culpable homicide conviction carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, but the judge has full discretion of his sentence.

RIP Reeva Steenkamp.
