Hubris or savvy media awareness, college athletes really make some questionable decisions. One of the worst things that a player can do is announce that they are the “best” at anything.  Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly made a bold statement about him being the QB in the nation.

At SEC’s media day, Kelly gave his input on more than a few topics. However, the one that really struck a nerve was what Kelly had to say about himself. Kelly was asked if he was the best QB in the SEC to which he replied, “I’m the best quarterback in the nation.  You have to feel that way, . . . In order to have confidence in yourself and team, you have to think you’re the best. That’s what I want our whole team — from offensive linemen to running backs — we have to think we’re the best players and the best team out there.”  He ended his comments with this statement, “I want to be remembered as the greatest quarterback that ever played.”

Kelly is a good quarterback at Ole Miss, but I wouldn’t say that he’s the best in the nation. He had a completion percentage of 65.1 with 31 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions last season.  He wasn’t able to take his team to a National Championship and does not have any where near as much experience as other quarterbacks. Kelly was the Clemson quarterback, but dismissed from their program which doesn’t bode well for him. Getting dismissed could have ended Kelly’s career.

Even though it didn’t, that’s still such a bold statement for him. He doesn’t really have a leg to stand on or anything to support that statement. The one thing that I have to commend Kelly for is his confidence in himself and his team.  This will be Kelly’s second year as Ole Miss’s starter so we’ll see if he stacks up as the best QB in the nation.
