For most of my life, Derek Jeter has been the shortstop for the New York Yankees.  Earlier this year we learned that this would be the last season that would be the reality.  Every city the Yankees have played in has honored the Yankee great.  Last night at the MLB All Star Game, it was no different.  For the final time in his career, Jeter came up to bat at an All-Star Game.  This time, he was welcomed with a standing ovation including all of the players on the field, who could not hide their admiration for the shortstop.

Most players grew up adoring Jeter for his tenacity on the field and grace off the field.   Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki admits he wears the number two because of Jeter.  Never one to shy away from big moments, Jeter ripped a double on his first at-bat.  National League starting pitcher Adam Wainwright admits he may have “grooved” one in there for him to hit, but later backtracked on his comment.  The best tribute, however, came during a commercial for the Jordan Brand which had everyone, including Michael Jordan, tip their cap for the captain.

The American League won the game 5-3 with Angels young star Mike Trout being named MVP of the game.  Jeter finish the game going 2 for 2.  While Jeter deserves plenty of praise for what he has done for the sport, Major League Baseball failed to mention some very notable people who passed away this year including Ralph Kiner, Frank Cashen, Don Zimmer, and Mr. Padre Tony Gwynn.   Not once did Fox or MLB mention any of these men who had a profound impact on the game of baseball.
