News broke early this morning that Lebron James is set to become the next Micheal Jordan. No, he isn’t taking his place in the basketball world just yet, but becoming his predecessor for the greatest sports movie ever, “Space Jame”.  The sequel reportedly is to be directed by Justin Lin of ‘Fast and Furious’ fame.

There isn’t a release date for the movie yet and Warner Brothers has yet to officially confirm the project. However, there have been rumors circulating for years that James would reprise the iconic role. No details have been released about the plot of the movie either, but it will more than likely be similar to the first. The writing team of Lin, Andrew Dodge, and Alfredo Botello have a tough task of coming up with something that will interest today’s generation and not be the same exact story as the original.

As a fan of the original “Space Jam”, I believe that it will be hard to top the original. It was one of the first movies besides ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’ to mix live-action and cartoons which was not an easy feat at that time. With the technology now, the effects for the movie might end up being even better and will likely surpass the original graphics.

Another aspect that some fans of the original might worry about is the lead actor. Of course, we all adored Michael Jordan but will the same go for Lebron James? After his film debut in ‘Trainwreck” which actually wasn’t too bad, it could be a challenge for James and for the 90’s generation who grew up with the original.  One upside for the movie will hopefully be the cameos of well-known basketball stars that could be featured. Can you just imagine DeAndre Jordan acting like Charles Barkley did in the original or even someone like Seth Rogen or Chris Hemsworth playing the same role as Bill Murray? Whatever the case is, the movie already has some high expectations. Let’s not forget the most iconic part of the movie, who will be lucky enough to score the lead single of the movie soundtrack?  Is it even possible to top R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”?
