Saying that the Washington Redskins need to be fixed is a tad bit of an understatement, but it’s true. The Redskins have won a measly 7 games over the past two years and this year, it looks like nothing is going to change for them.

However, there are a few steps that I’d like to suggest for the Redskins. Since I’m not a GM and a Cowboys fan, these are just a few suggestions on how I think they could get back to their former glory, but not glorious enough to beat the Cowboys.

  1. Get a solid quarterback
RG3 was good. Keyword in that sentence is was. Now, it’s just sad trying to watch a guy who is trying to make a comeback without even trying. With all of the injuries to his name, RG3 should probably just give up at this point or maybe decide to sit on the bench for the season to study and make himself better. Then there’s Kirk Cousins who is almost as bad as RG3. Actually, Cousins and Griffin’s stats aren’t that different which is not a good thing at all. Trading Cousins to another team would be a good option for the Skins and free up some cap space. Then last but certainly not least, there is Colt McCoy. McCoy was brought in to alleviate some of the workloads on Cousins and to take the place of an injured RG3, but like the other two, McCoy excelled at interceptions instead of touchdowns. If the Redskins could either completely get rid of their two backups or pick up a solid QB in free agency, they could have a chance. I’d suggest someone like Zack Mettenberger who is young and eager after being replaced by Marcus Mariota.
  2. Fire Jay Gruden
This one is a little harsh, but could be the key to the Redskins’ success. Gruden has only been the coach for a year and his freshman coaching year has been lackluster. One problem that I have with Gruden is his unwillingness to cooperate with his quarterbacks which is an essential part of being a coach. If the coach doesn’t have a good relationship with the quarterback, everything starts to fall apart. A good example of this is when RG3 was injured during their preseason game with the Lions and days later, Gruden assured that he would be fine. Now, it looks like RG3 probably won’t even be playing until the regular season contrary to what Gruden said. If Gruden spent half as much time reassuring the media that he’s not fat into his coaching, maybe the Redskins would be more successful.
  3. Focus solely on football
This one is a no-brainer, but it’s something the Redskins don’t really do. Most of the talk about the Redskins is not about their playing, but actually about their players. RG3’s recent quote about being the best QB in the game blew up all over the internet instead of his camp performance. That is the kind of thing that the Redskins media team shouldn’t have to deal with or focus on. The team should be getting the fans excited about the regular season instead of having to talk about RG3 and his ridiculous quotes. They should just grind grind  grind until they get into top shape for the regular season.
  4. Make smart draft picks next year
Once again, this might be another no-brainer but the Redskins have been making some pretty unfortunate draft picks lately. Their newest first-round pick, Brandon Scherff was cited to be the next Zack Martin, but all reports from camp have been mediocre at best. Scherff was not NFL ready like he was expected to be and there was a lot more talent left on the draft board at that point. The Redskins could have had picked Danny Shelton who is already making an impact, Ereck Flowers who went to the NY Giants or Phillip Dorsett of the Colts to name a few left on the board then. The Redskins really could have had anyone they wanted, but settled for Scherff.

If the Redskins even made half an effort to complete any of these four steps, they could improve slowly but surely. No matter what, though, the Redskins will continue to fail if they don’t change their ways.
